Glutamine is a type of amino acid that is naturally found in the body. However they can be consumed by mouth to improve nutrition, manage sickle cell and aid recovering for injuries, burns, surgery, radiation, complications of HIV, cancer chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant and many other treatments. For some conditions like a person recovering from surgery, glutamine can be given intravenously. Glutamine is produced commercially in tablets, and powder form. It is gotten from the fermentation process, with the use of bacteria.

As amino acids are the building blocks of protein, glutamine is mostly available in large quantities compared to other amino acids. Glutamine is formed in the muscle, and the blood distributes it to the target areas. Glutamine is an important supplement, as it helps the immune system, gut function, and other body systems, especially for relieving stress. Glutamine also helps to provide fuel, (carbon and nitrogen), to various cells in the body. It is also needed to make other necessary chemicals in the body, such as glucose (sugar) and amino acid.

Glutamine helps to relieve traumatic injury, as the nitrogen needed for recovery is majorly gotten from Glutamine. Taking a Glutamine supplement is helpful to health. When the body uses the glutamine in-store more than what the muscle can produce during stress, muscle wasting may occur. In most cases, this is likely to happen with people with HIV/AIDS. This, taking glutamine supplements is of great advantage.

Uses of Glutamine

Glutamine is effective in treating certain sickness and severe conditions.

  • Sickle cell disease - Glutamine is an approved description that is usually taken by mouth for sickle cell disease. Sometimes, drug usage may interact with some nutrients in the body, and also, it is sometimes difficult for some people to stay consistent with the routine dosage. Thus, the need for a supplement. Using Glutamine supplement may reduce frequent visit to the hospital and the number of people that visits the hospital often.
  • Recovery after surgery - Although, administering glutamine intravenously aids recovery after surgery, especially in cases of abdominal surgery. However, the use of intravenous nutrition, such as a glutamine supplement will help hasten the recovery and shorten the number of days spent in a hospital. Moreover, glutamine alone does not help reduce the risk of death after surgery, but it can help reduce the risk of infection. As much as a nutrient supplement is not majorly used for the treatment of diseases, its role in sickness recovery cannot be neglected. Nutrition and drug go hand in hand, in treating diseases.
  • Trauma - A lot of research has shown that glutamine prevents bacteria from moving from the intestine and infecting another vital part of the body, after major injuries. For most people who are critically ill, glutamine may help reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections. Generally, glutamine does not reduce the risk of death of critically ill people.
